Born and raised in the Canary Islands (Spain), Blahnik graduated from the University of Geneva in 1965 and continued to study art in Paris. In 1968 he moved to London UK and worked at fashion boutique "Zapata". He also wrote articles for Vogue Italia. When he showed his portfolio of fashions and designs to Diana Vreeland, she immediately noticed his talent and told him to design only shoes.
